Welcome to the Group's New Member Information Page.
New Member Information for 2009
Hello, and thank you for taking time to look at our website, your window to the Lancashire Young Persons Walking Group (LYPWG). LYPWG ('the Group') caters for walkers in their 20's & 30's (though some of our original members are now in their 40's as well!) and we try and produce a varied programme of walks from easy, sociable rambles to harder hill treks and scrambles. If you are interested in finding out about the Group then you are more than welcome to either come along to one of our New Member Nights or just turn up on one of our walks.
Attending a New Member Night
We hold New Member Nights at least once a month in different locations around Lancashire (scroll down for details!). The New Members Night is an informal get together at a pub during a weekday evening, enabling you to meet with a few of our group members and find out more about LYPWG and what we do. On a New Members Night we'll try and answer any questions you have about the group or about walking in general. You'll also have the chance to meet your local New Members Representative who is specifically tasked with ensuring new members get the best out of their membership. We ask anyone who comes along to a new members night to give us their e-mail address and we’ll send you a welcome e-mail message from us.

Attending your first LYPWG walk
We tend to walk during the weekend, with one walk on a Saturday and another on a Sunday. Our walk programme is quite varied, including walks of different difficulties and distances, from gentle easy grade walks of just a few miles in the Lancashire countryside to full on hard grade walks summiting some of the country's highest fells and mountains. Which kind of walk you will join us on for your first 'taster' is very dependent on your experience. However, for people who are fairly new to walking anywhere other than in their local environment, and want to give it a go for the first time, we recommend that you try one of our New Members Nights first, followed by an easy grade walk as a way of getting started with the group (we do try and stage an easy social walk on the weekend after the new members night for novice walkers, and people who are new to the group).
If you are coming on a walk for the very first time, then we recommend, depending on the difficulty of the walk, the season and the weather, that you wear or bring the following items with you (ask the New Members Secretary or the leader of the walk you are attending if unsure what to include):
*
Good comfortable walking boots that provide ankle support
* Good quality waterproof jacket & trousers
* Extra clothing layers (e.g. a fleece top) to put on/take off depending on the
temperature
* A hat and gloves
* A packed lunch
* At least a litre of drinking water
* Some clean footwear and clothing to change into for a drink in the pub after
the walk.
Becoming a Member of LYPWG
If you enjoy your first walk with us, then you are free to come along to up to two more Group events, either walks or socials, before making a commitment to join. This is done by joining the Ramblers Association and affiliating yourself with the Group. The cost of membership is currently £29.50 for a single person’s membership, and when you affiliate yourself with our Group then a percentage of the membership comes back to the Group to help us pay for running costs. Details on how to join the Group via the Ramblers Association is available here.
